Delphine Galou is gifted with a distinctive, velvet-toned contralto voice and is admired for her excellent musicianship. Her programme today will bring us extracts from oratorios and motets from the Italian baroque, displaying strong influences from the world of opera. On this journey through musical affetti, Galou will be accompanied by the Accademia Bizantina directed by Ottavio Dantone, who return to the Torroella Festival after their last visit in 2010.

In 1931, Erich Doflein, a violin teacher at the University of Freiburg, commissioned the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók to write a violin duet for inclusion in a teaching method he was in the process of writing. Bartók, who had written piano pieces for teaching purposes, contributed a work (the last in this collection), which Doflein judged very difficult. The composer added more duets, until he reached a total of 45 (no. 36 is double). Lina Tur, from Ibiza, and the Italian, Enrico Onofri, come together to perform all of these musical miniatures – pieces that are much more than mere exercises for violinists.

Beethoven’s music is a great outburst in sound which looks to the future with optimism and transforming energy – intense, profound, vital and challenging music. Big Bang Beethoven takes us on a fascinating journey through the life and work of this great composer, who had to confront the worst possible adversity a musician can suffer – that of extreme deafness.

The Brahms Project brings together four outstanding Spanish musicians, the violinist Josep Colomé, the viola player Joaquín Riquelme, the cellist David Apellániz and the pianist Enrique Bagaría. In addition to their careers as soloists, these artists come together to perform chamber music, having recorded Brahms’ complete piano quartets, the first of which they will play in this concert at Torroella. For the second part of the concert, they have invited the excellent young double bass player from Galicia, Uxía Martínez, to join them in one of Schubert’s great chamber works – the “Trout” Quintet.

Església de Sant Genís

Tenebrae is one of the great British chamber choirs specialising in Renaissance polyphony. They come to the Torroella Festival to perform one of the high points of their repertory – the magnificent Officium defunctorum by Tomás Luis de Victoria, the Requiem that the great Spanish Renaissance composer wrote in 1603 on the death of the Dowager Empress Maria, sister to Philip II. Victoria’s work is joined in this concert by Joan Cererols’ Missa de batalla (1649). Cererols was born in Martorell and this year we commemorate the 400th anniversary of his birth.

L'Apothéose is a young ensemble established in 2015 that specialises in early music and has won many European awards. These include first prize and the Eeemerging prize at the Göttingen Handel Competition in 2017, and the Circuits FestClásica prize, 2018, for which they prepared this programme commemorating the 330th anniversary of the birth of Maria Luisa Gabriela of Savoy (Turin, 1688-Madrid, 1714), queen consort of Spain. The programme of the concert gives an overview of the music that would have been heard in the life and times of this Italian princess, betrothed to Philip V when still only a child, thanks to a political agreement, and who died prematurely of tuberculosis at the age of 25.

The 20th century has been generous in giving us a wealth of music for guitar. Some 300 concerti were written for the instrument, and two above all have become the most famous in the repertoire, the Concierto de Aranjuez and the Fantasía para un gentilhombre, both by the Valencian composer Joaquín Rodrigo. It will be a unique experience to hear both these works performed in one concert by the legendary guitarist Pepe Romero, accompanied by the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès under Rubén Gimeno, in a concert produced by the Torroella de Montgrí Festival.

The music of Johann Sebastian Bach has been copied, arranged and paraphrased thousands of times over the years. Bach himself liked to borrow ideas and musical forms and themes from other colleagues and he even transcribed complete works of other composers without ever acknowledging their origin. His was a different period, when royalties didn’t exist. The French violinist Amandine Beyer and her ensemble Gli Incogniti pay homage to those times, with an enjoyable game of hide and seek in quest of works that have been rightly or wrongly attributed to Bach.

These include de chaconnes and marionas which crossed the Atlantic and appeared in the first books of music for Spanish guitar, vocal pieces with ostinato by Monteverdi, early seguiriyas, tientos, tangos and even a traditional Catalan tune – El Cant dels Ocells.

Returning to the Torroella Festival, where they performed for the first time in 1998, the ensemble of soloists of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra bring us a delightful programme of music by two of the most important Czech composers – Dvorák, with the popular Slavonic Dances that brought him to fame, and Janácek, with his charming Suite for String Orchestra. The programme is completed with a work by Dvorák’s highly gifted son-in-law, Josef Suk – his beautiful Meditation on the old Bohemian chorale “Saint Wenceslas”, written in 1914 as a clandestine national anthem for the Czech people, then under Austrian rule.

Beethoven, the archetype of the Romantic composer, is the star of the closing concert of this 38th Torroella de Montgrí Festival, in a symphonic programme performed by the renowned PKF-Prague Philharmonia. They will perform the composer’s Third Symphony, a precursor of Romanticism, and the Fifth Piano Concerto, a work of exceptional virtuoso character, which blurs the frontier between concerto and symphonic form.
