In recent years, the North American saxophone player and composer Lakecia Benjamin has been featured on the covers of the top jazz magazines. The American and British press has praised her talent, shown both in solo recordings and accompanied by well-known artists such as The Roots, Stevie Wonder, Gregory Porter, Santigold, Talib Kweli or Alicia Keys, among others. Drawing inspiration from names such as Wayne Shorter, Erykah Badu or Alice and John Coltrane, she connects modern jazz with funk and R&B, giving a musical backdrop to themes related to civil rights and contemporary social issues. With her fourth and latest album, Phoenix, Lakecia Benjamin reaffirms her position as a committed artist, alongside guest stars of the stature of Dianne Reeves, Wayne Shorter and the feminist activist Angela Davis. This album has earned her three nominations to the 2024 Grammy awards in the jazz category: the best jazz performance, the best instrumental album, and the best composition for the track Amerikkan skin.

To sail, wander, lose your way and founder are challenges and dangers that anyone venturing to explore the unknown can encounter. Joan Mar Sauqué (Garrigoles, 1996) returns to l'Estartit with his quintet to present his latest album, Nàufrags, with new tracks he has composed that revolve around the sensation of drifting without direction and finding firm ground. A hymn to uncertainty. Including both instrumental melodies and vocals, all of the tracks point in the same direction, including a suite dedicated to Fernando Pessoa, with original text by the Portuguese poet.

The members of this multigenerational, multinational, all-female jazz supergroup number among some of today's best jazz players. Originating from different countries, they came together for the first time to tour European jazz festivals in the summer of 2017. They decided to call themselves Artemis after the Greek goddess, daughter of Zeus and twin sister of Apollo, and in 2020 they published their first album with a selection of their own compositions and arrangements of other musicians' melodies which has been universally acclaimed by the critics. Three years on, they have published In real Time, which stands out for the group's skill in improvising and their talent in composition.

On the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Cuban band Irakere, the legendary pianist Chucho Valdés and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval pay tribute to the mythical Afro-Cuban jazz group they played with, celebrating the regeneration of Cuban music they achieved with their fusion of jazz, rock, funk, popular Cuban rhythms and classical music. With a sonority produced by blending electronic and popular instruments, they developed Afro-Cuban jazz structures in dance music that have endured to the present day.

Together, Las Karamba have earned their popularity by fusing rhythms and tunes to produce a unique melody danced to the beat of the son, cha-cha-cha, salsa, timba and rap. Since 2018, they have been sharing their way of making music as an affirmation of everything that women can do, both on and off stage, transforming their stories of migrations, musical heritages and subversive and diverse motherhoods into music.

The legendary saxophonist Charles Lloyd closes this year's festival where he will present at l'Estartit, his only concert in Spain, his latest release, The sky will still be there tomorrow, a double album published last March on the occasion of his 86th birthday. As a musical giant who has been part of the history of jazz during the last century, Lloyd has never stopped creating new material and, in his new album, he presents a collection with six new themes intertwined with reimagined melodies from previous albums. A whole life dedicated to music.
