The Goldbergs are an outstanding example of the musical genre of variation, one of the primordial forms of music based on repetition, a method which makes the score recognisable and comprehensible to the human ear. According to Bach’s first biographer, the work was composed so that Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, one of the composer’s best students, could perform the variations during the sleepless nights of Count Hermann-Karl von Keyserling. Benjamin Alard, despite his youth, is a great specialist in Bach, and one of the most talented harpsichordists active today, an established performer of these variations.

Josep Ferrer i Esteve (1835-1916) was born in Torroella de Montgrí and was a successful guitarist, a noted composer, an excellent teacher, a historian of his instrument and a tireless leader in guitar circles in Barcelona and Paris during the last quarter of the 19th century. His guitar duets are preserved in an autograph manuscript at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and have been rediscovered by the German guitarist Jens Franke, who joins Jørgen Skogmo at the Torroella Festival to give the music’s first performance in modern times.

A contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann was considered the most important German composer of his time. Neither Bach nor Handel, both of whom were on friendly terms with the Hamburg composer, could compete with his popularity. But after his death, Telemann’s star began to fade, and at present his works are only rarely performed. The renowned Academy of Ancient Music has revived two of Telemann’s works for this concert which, also including music by his friend Bach, marks the 250th anniversary of the composer’s death.

“Once upon a time…” “In a country far, far away there was…” Such are the traditional beginnings of fairy tales and in fairy tales there are forests. Little Red Riding Hood goes to her grandmother’s house, Tom Thumb leaves breadcrumbs to mark his way back home and Cinderella loses her slipper. There is the Frog Prince, Snow White and of course the Wolf, who wants to eat up everyone else.
